“MY Toy” unites 13 Malaysian designers of Art Toys- Part Commercial Figurine, Part Artistic Sculpture- for the first exhibition dedicated to Art Toys as a contemporary artform in Titikmerah gallery. This exhibition hopes to explore and reintroduce the idea of an Art Toy not only as a collectible sculpture but as fine art objects within contemporary art. From its birth in Micheal Lau’s Gardener figurines in 1995 to its popular adoption by contemporary artists like KAWS, Takashi Murakami, Yoshitomo Nara, Ron English, Gary Baseman and Emilio Garcia, the emphasis on the artist behind the object had been a common denominator. Although the sculpts are still mass-produced objects, each figure is a unique collectible piece made within a limited run that explores different materials (from wood to vinyl) and narratives that subvert cultural themes, literature and myths. “MY Toy” introduces Malaysian Toy Designers that create one off sculptures, a series of soft vinyl figures or custom colorways of figurines.
A showcase featuring different styles of toy sculptures made by 13 local artists in Malaysia such as Badjuju Toys, Michael Chuah Design, Little Good Thing, Sean Lee Studio, Urban Cre3atures, Messy Desk Studio, Little Rock Production, Made by K-Rod, JNJF Design, Kebab Toys, Oodplex, Blank Toys and Tek.
